Anti Theft 2002 Ford Explorer Question

I got into my truck this morning and my anti theft light on my dash was flickering. I went to start the engine, and when I turned the key I got nothing ( didn't even try to turn over). Also last night I turned my truck off and I opened the door to get out and I noticed that the interior lights did not come on. My anti theif light was flickering this time also with the door opened, but once I shut the door the light stopped flickering. I waited a few minutes and I heard a relay click, so I tried to start my truck again. This time my truck started. Any ideas on what's going on with this?

Sounds like you probably have an issue with the PATS system (or whatever the acronym is in 2002). It could be an issue with the transponder in the key you are trying, you may want to try another programmed key. It could also be an intermittant transponder antenna coil around the ignition key cylinder.

You may want to track down someone with a high end scan tool that can scan the PATS computer for codes. That should point you in the general direction.

Does it seem to make a difference if you unlock the door with the key switch or the key fob? What if you don't lock the door, any difference?

The door pin switch may be sticking so the anti-theft system doesn't see any of the doors being opened. I don't know how that should affect the PATS system though. I'll have to check the wiring diagrams. I installed remote start on my 2000 Mountaineer with PATS and didn't have to trick it into thinking the driver's door opened first, but maybe the changed things for 2002.

According to the service manual, "The indicator will prove out for three seconds when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START under normal operation. If there is a PATS concern, this indicator will either flash rapidly or glow steadily when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START. The PATS system also flashes the theft indicator every two seconds at ignition OFF to act as a visual deterrent."

Since you don't seem to be getting the rapid flash or continuous illumination, your PATS system (aka SecuriLock) may not think there is a concern (or a programmed key).

No mention is made in the Description section or the troubleshooting section of the system needing to see an opened then closed door.

I've heard of aftermarket keys not working right at very low temperatures. Not sure what the weathers like in your area or if it's an OEM key.

Also I got a key cut this weekend from a locksmith friend of mine and he told me some models had isues with GEM keys(the keys that have the blue and silver Ford emblem stamped on the black part). I guess the silver contact actually affects the signature of the transponder chip in the key.
