Starter, thermostat troubles
Have a 97 Astro and need to replace the starter.
Where is it located? It is difficult to see under the front. We have a Haynes book but don't have a good picture of the engine. Any suggestions for easy replacement? We have replaces starters on other vehicles. Thermostat? Is it right beside the radiator? The Haynes book doesn't give a good picture. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated! It is cold here in PA! 10* and windy so getting this done quickly is important! Thanks! Astro in PA |

Re: Starter, thermostat troubles
Welcome to the forum!
Starter: The starter is located at the rear of the engine, underneath, on the passenger side. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Two bolts hold the starter on. The wiring is accessable after you remove the bolts and drop the starter down. Thermostat: The upper and lower air filter housing and air inlet hose will need to be removed for access. Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine. Remove the hose clamp and the hose from the water outlet housing. Remove the two bolts that hold the water outlet to the intake manifold. No gasket is used, just a seal on the thermostat which usually comes on the new thermostat. |

Re: Starter, thermostat troubles
the thermo on the 4.3 is right under the top radiator hose outlet fitting on the engine. easy to get to. i changed mine when it finaly warmed up to -9 degrees and i could take off the gloves for a couple of minutes at a time. it helps to have a mug full of a hot beverage handy.
the starter is more of a PIA for a big chested guy like me. get the vehicle up on some jack stands or ramps and you should be ok. pretty straight forward, no cross members to remove or anything like that. |

Thanks guys!
It took a little work, since we had to "de-ice" the van and my husband got quite cold and wet while working on it, but we got the starter and thermostat replaced. We are novices at car repair so your helpful hints and the Haynes repair book got the job done! This is a great site and I'll return if I have any more questions! Thanks again! |
