i need new keys
alright, my low fuel theory on why my Sentry key won't start my 99 GC Lareado is wrong.
today it wouldn't start because of the key (fault code P1685) at all. i'm hoping i just need new keys but there's a problem. i only have 1 key so the self-programming thing is a "no go". i've read that the dealer has special equipment to "program new keys into the system" if all keys are lost. does anybody know if they just need the new, blank keys or do i need to tow in my GC, which will not start, to them in order to program something into the car? i'm pretty PO'd that my own security system keeps me from driving my own car & that the keys are fairly expensive. it's not going to make me feel any better when i have to pay for towing for a stinking set of keys. any help would be greatly appreciated. The dealer will have to have the vehicle as well as the car, and if you tried to self program the one key by itself, you may also need to have the skim module replaced .

Re: i need new keys
the dealer says i need to have the car there.
turns out you can reset your SKIM by leaving the key in the ON position for at least an hour. I can get my car started to drive to the dealer now. the problem is that i've called a couple of dealers & the lowest price, so far, is $85 for the key & programming. not to be a cheapo, but that just seems like a scam. i'm going to tape the key i have to the SKIM & use a non-Sentry key. a few guys on a Wrangler sight say that's the way to go. i'm also considering a "transponder bypass" which would also give me remote start & cost less than what a dealer wants for a stinking key. thanks for the info. if anybody else has any ideas, keep 'em coming. |

Re: i need new keys
I don't suggest doing this. If your vehicle is stolen and your insurance co. finds out you did this, and they will, you will not be covered.
Call your local locksmiths, most locksmiths these days have the equipment to do most transponder keys and usually much cheaper than the dealer. To give you a comparison, I get $30 for these keys and $25 for programming. Your not going to get this for free, unless you know somebody. I've got about $35,000 invested in OEM & Aftermarket programming and diagnostic equipment to do transponder keys and can still do them cheaper than the dealer. |

I just had a new key made it was $60.00. I also had to have a new key cylinder put in the colume. I could put the key in, but could not turn it on. $240.00 later (tow included) it was fixed.

Hi .... related to this...

I have a question... you say that your car starts and you be able to take to the dealaer for programming... How many time, by reseting the SKIM, the car/truck it is running, so you can take to the dealer....????? Thanks for your help... |

Re: i need new keys
Do you have a permanently working key now?
Being able to reset the SKIM like that is something Jeep owners should know. |
