Why does the GMC brand exist??

GMC and Chevy pickups are exact clones marketed towards the same demographic. Ford is able to claim #1 status solely because of GM's senseless badging shenanigans, which isn't right because everyone knows that Chevy is far better.

The 2 models are geared towards different demographics,,,Chevrolet is geared towards work vehicles and GMC is geared as a "Luxury" truck.
Typically you will find more standard equipment on a GMC truck.
Let Ford say what it wants...I know which one I would drive.

Re: Why does the GMC brand exist??

I was told years ago by my dad that at one time they were different trucks. I don't know if that's true.

I believe they kept the GMC line so the Pontiac/Buick/Olds dealers would have a truck to sell.

Or it could be that they kept the GMC line so that the people that just hated Chevy could still by a real truck

Perhaps....but going by the commercials, you would think that GMC is the work vehicle and Chevy is for John Mellencamp fans.

Re: Why does the GMC brand exist??

Hi,
In the fortys and fiftys, the GMC had a larger engine which also had real oil pressure to the rod bearings rather than the dip and splash the Chevy had.
We swapped the gmc engine into the chevys for more scoot power.
The gmc had a much truckier looking instrument panel.
Starting in 1955 the chevy went to their 265 V8 and GMC used the pontiac 316 V8 painted red.
The GMC large trucks used the Olds V8.
Both the pontiac and olds had more torque than the small block chevy.
I don't know when they started using the Chevy V8 in GMC trucks which took away their individuality.

Re: Why does the GMC brand exist??

I asked the same question a few years ago and was told by a friend who works at a GM dealership and is a mechanic at the same - the only reason GMC exists is so that the other GM dealers can sell them . Chevy trucks can only be sold at a Chevy dealership whereas the GMC can be found at an Oldsmobile,Pontiac or Buick dealership- nothing more, but they did change the cosmetic apprearance of them ,just for a different taste. And with a GMC ,years ago anyway, used to be considered a farmers truck because with a GMC they could order whichever engine they needed . Apparently there was no "standard " engine size .

Re: Why does the GMC brand exist??

Regardless of the history of GMC/CHEVY i stll think that GMC is a better over all looking truck. Even if from the 80-early 90's they looked identical then they had the whole front clip change on both trucks, which in my view GMC got the better of it, just seems to me that GMC is a better company and im glad that i purchased gmc "professional grade" just seems to me that the GMC company is more of a WORK TRUCK where is the Chevy is a sorta
"weekend" type get away pickup.

and ,thadrawr GOOD QUOTE, it is very tru

There both owned and manufactured by GM so whats the difference..They build them so when break down we can impress the ladies.. ohh ya & spend money..

Question!! Ever notice that all truck makers talk about how TOUGH there trucks are, even there older models, Well ever see a truck WITHOUT a dented sagging Front/Rear bumper mostly rear. and your supposed to hit those.
Built Ford Tough Unless your a Bumper

This is the reason.

Since 1999, GMC sales have been on the increase. There are a lot of buyers who don't like the Chevy (me for one) but like to buy GM and GMC is there.

For those that think you can get more options in one vs the other, its not true. Chevy and GMC have a few unique models but the basic trucks are the same except for trim items, grill, bumpers, options pkgs etc but the same option available on a GMC are also available on the Chevy unless its a unique model like the Denali or Avalanche.

Personnaly I cannot stand the looks of the Chevy since 1999 and the new body style it worse IMO.
