HUD - special windshield or not?

I have a 2004 Grand Prix GT2 with HUD and my windshield just cracked! I was told that the special windshields were 3 or 4 times the price of a regular windshield, but then it was suggested that it was just a money grab - that the regular windshields will actually work fine with HUD. Has anybody tried this or know for sure? Thanks

Re: HUD - special windshield or not?

I know the 97-03 models have a special windshield with a more reflective anti-shatter layer between the two layers of glass. I'm not sure if the 04's do, but I will check when I get to work on Tuesday for you. I've heard you can use a standard windshield, the image will just be much dimmer and not as sharp.

Re: HUD - special windshield or not?

The windshields are different.
with HUD : GM part#10340037, dealer retail $524.50
w/o hud : GM part #10340036, dealer retail $418.50

As you can see, the price difference isn't 3x to 4x more, but it is a bit more expensive.

Re: HUD - special windshield or not?

Either way for the HUD windshield it is very expensive. The price above ^^^ doesn't include labor. Most of the local windshield shops charge around $650 for the HUD windshield including replacement but in contrast only charge around $190.00 for the regular windshield to include installation. The brand is similar to OEM which is PPG.

We had a member a few years back claim that he was using the regular windshield and his HUD display was working OK but not as clear as the special HUD windshield.

Re: HUD - special windshield or not?

Guys over on ***Edited Out by Moderator*** run regular windshields all the time. Guys are even installing HUD's in cars that do not have them. Also they used to have a picture thread of the reflection on non HUD windshields after an install

Welcome back.

Tell me about it. Between the raising of old threads and solicitations to other auto forums like "ClubMed" my patience and ban stick are wearing out.

GTPCatz and PontiacGuy123 are fine examples and are hereby awarded the following consolation prize.

Hey Rich.

Sometimes humor helps. But I have to give credit where it is due. The BanLandia thing was the creation of our Admin, twospirits. It is awarded on special occasions and to deserving members (most former) aka losers. In the case of GTPCatz and his alias of PontiacGuy123 it was well deserved and he earned it.

The idiot decided to advertise ClubMed and one of it's affiliates ClubMedXXX on AF. After a polite warning to cease advertising he decided to become an asshole and challenge the assigned Moderators and the rule of no advertising other auto forums. Plus we found out he was an Admin/Moderator at one of those forums. I did not write the rules but have a duty to enforce them. The Community Rules are established by AF Admin and Igor the owner of AF. Anyways, he lost the appeal and became more belligerant. Wound up getting banned permanently. After the ban he decides to act like a child or moron and continue soliciting AF members with the same M.O. of referring our loyal members to ClubMed this time using the alias of PontiacGuy123. But he got caught and was bannished permanently again. If he comes back he will get banned again. I guess AF causes dependency...lol.

Then he decided to get really vindictive and decided to publish his ban on ClubMed and bad mouth AF. Man I love getting my name written on bathroom walls. The thread was short lived and died out. For a while he had the sympathy of guys like Ed Morad but Ed backed out of the thread once he found out this idiot was referring to Automotive Forums. Ed gets alot of parts referrals from AF and it's members. Money talks and shit walks.
