87 LesabreCustom, replaced steering column and now no ignition

I replaced my steering column in my 1987 Buick Lesabre Custom - I have fuel on my rail and have spark but do not the car won't turn over. It will start if I put ether in it, but stalls once very shortly after the ether is gone. Is there some kind of safety switch or should I have replaced the computer that went with the steering column?

What is the new column out of?

I took the column out of another 87 Buick -- not sure if it was a lesabre, but it was a 4dr and mine is a 2dr. But all the plugs and connections did line up correctly. I even changed out the key to see if that would make a difference but it did not.
