Yay for hacking hi-def DVDs!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070125/...ckers_dvd_dc_1
I can only hope the technologically-adept out there continue to pound on these security protocols. Anyone who's read about the planned security around HD/BluRay knows that there's some nasty stuff these studios have in the works (security measures designed to cripple your DVD player's firmware in the event of a "violation"? Yes, it's in the tunnel.) So I'm all for people hacking the living shit out of this stuff. I also find it funny that they reference a "cooling-down" in the DVD market as part of the impetus behind the marketing of the new formats. Of course the market's cooling down -- people are finally succeeding in completing the revamping of their media collections into DVD format. Now these companies expect people are going to once again start shelling out the bucks to upgrade ONCE MORE? To hell with that, I say. And anyways, how the hell could the average Joe six-pack, who's already supposedly concerned about the costs of Iraq, gas, inflation, and credit card debt even begin to justify the costs associated with upgrading to this "wonderful" HD format. Let's face it -- HD, while nice, is not worth the money. Period. But don't worry, at least that $2000 HD-ready TV you bought a couple years ago will be ready and waiting for you to plug that shiny new hi-def DVD player in once you DO spring for it. Oh yeah, you DO have an HDMI port on that TV, right? Because one of the developing encryption plans involves insuring that the hi-def movie will ONLY play over a DIGITAL connection to allow for one more easily manipulated link in the chain -- don't forget: component, composite, and S-video output is only analog, and DVI doesn't provide the necessary resolution. Alas, how will I watch Talladega Nights in HD?

Fuck DRM and HDCP. Fuck them right in their filthy, greedy, Satan's-cock-sucking ears.

Re: Yay for hacking hi-def DVDs!
this DRM stuff is a load of crap.
i had an MP3 player that wouldn't allow me to play half my music because of the stupid licence, it's not protecting any industry, it's stopping people from play what they paid for. it's bullshit, i buy a CD perfectly legally, but i can't play it on an MP3 player.

My lateral geniculate nucleus and extrastriate cortex can only process visual information to very limited degree. Which is why I'm still struggling to see how Gundam is graphically better than PacMan, let alone regular vs. HD.

Re: Yay for hacking hi-def DVDs!
Large Corporations develop a new technology to protect their intellectual property, the smarty pants among the general populous cracks it, the general populous uses the Large Corporations IP without paying for it.
And the cycle repeats itself. Why all the excitement?
