97 GT Blower motor / resistor
I have read many of the good posts about replacement. Please correct me if I am wrong in this direction. I have lost all fan speeds, but on ocassion, the fan will turn on (this may be after letting the car sit a while without touching the switch, so I don't think it is the switch). Seems to go out primarily when cold. I believe I have to cut the housing in the engine compartment to get the fan out. From other forums, it does not appear to be the resistor, but would it be best to just replace both at the same time and if so, where is it located on the 97? Am I missing something before I start cutting?

Re: 97 GT Blower motor / resistor
Welcome to AF!!
Don't cut anything!!! The fan is located up under the dash on the passenger side of the car. Removing the seat helps with access. Remove the panel under the dash and look up toward the firewall. The fan is held in by three small bolts I can't remember if they are 6 or 6.5mm. Take the fan out and then replace the resistor. Replace the fan. In your case the fan may be bad along with the resistor since if doesn't work on high. The number 5 speed does not go through the resistor so replace the fan along with the resistor and you should be good to go. |

Re: 97 GT Blower motor / resistor
Some of the earlker posts indicate that you do need to cut this case from the engine compartment side for certain years. I will take another look as you indicate, but in the engine compartment, it does have an impression on the case I am talking about that states "cut here to remove motor." It appears to be a circular area the size of the motor. Are you certain of what you told me? Thanks.

Re: 97 GT Blower motor / resistor
After further research you are correct you will need to cut the housing to remove the motor on this model. (Stupid GM, I wish they could make up their mind on how they make things) Anyway remove the motor and replace it with a new one as I truly believe yours is failing. A new resistor is also in the cards. Make absolutely sure that you seal the opening to keep water out or you may have other issues later.
GM vehicles don't use the resistor for speed #5 that is why it usually works when all others fail. Of course the way GM does things that may not be true for every model. |

Re: 97 GT Blower motor / resistor
I did get the motor switched out, which is not a lot of fun. As others have said, it is somewhat difficult to get the housing cut. I used a utility knife to cut the upper half and I was able to just pull the housing to kind of rip the bottom off. I had to remove the alternator to create enough room. The new blower is working without having switched out the resistor as of yet. I will see if it stays working, but if I do replace the resistor, where is it located? Sealing up the housing will be fun as well......thanks for the feedback.
