98 Pontiac Grand am problem

My Pontiac Grand am se 98 3.5 4 cylinder with 150,000 miles. My Pontiac wants to die out on me when im at a red light, or i put it on stop sign. Then i press the gas pedal and it goes. The needle on the rpm that says 1 it flips up and down to 1 then the needle goes down to 0 like it wants to stop on me. It feels like the fuel is getting cut off, another words when i put my feet on the brake the car wants to stop the rpm needle goes down to 0 then jumps to 1. When im driving it or pressing the gas its fine on the highway. HELP!!!

Re: 98 Pontiac Grand am problem

Hi you do not have 3.5L 4 cylinder but you have 2.4L 150 HP just so that you know when you go to look for parts,
What you just described I would check MAF sensor, start your car put it in P and hit that MAF with your fingers just a bit see if engine speed changes If yes replace it. Its 89$ in A Zone. Also check your fuel pressure regulator instal fuel pressure gauge on your injector rail (engine off key on) should show 41-47 psi, start your car let it idle in P. monitor your gauge while disconecting the vacuum line that comes from your MAP sensor when you disconect that line your fuel pressure should jump up by 3psi. So 41-47psi + 3Psi if not replace your fuel pressure regulator. Also if you see any fuel in that vacuum line on the top of your regulator replace it. Good luck let us know your results. Also clean your IAC.

Is it just at a idle or at stop sign?
Any check engine lights?
Is the engine idle down to real slow before dying?

Yes , I believe its the idle Like i said i t wants to die out but the needle jumps a little bit. It was giving me a check engine light. But i left it on too long without taking it to the shop, and then the check engine light disaperead. I believe we took it to auto zone and it came out with some sensors problem but forgot the codes.

It was trying to tell you something then.
Get it rechecked for codes and post back code no.
Or have a repair shop look at it.

I had a similar problem. Go to AZ and get the codes read, then search here on that code. My problem turned out to be a dry-rotted vaccume hose that cost me 99 cents to repair.

Ask them to try. There may be stored or memory codes.
If nothing shows up you will have to look things over like vacuum lines or air intake hoses PCV vale or somthing unplugged.
Or have a repair shop check it out.

Do you have any way to check for codes?
Can you check for lose of spark or fuel pressure?
If not your best best is to find a good repair shop.
Have you got good towing insurance?
