Fuel Filter Location on a 1987 Caprice Classic?

I'm looking for the location of the fuel filter on my 1987 Caprice Classic with the 307 Y engine.

Also, while I'm asking about that, maybe I'll toss out a couple other questions I had.

First, is it true that if there is water on the floor of the passenger side, your heater core is done? My car pumps out luke warm air, warm enough to keep my windows from frosting even on a cold day. Though she is warmer at an idle than while running the roads. To be honest, I just thought my windshield was leaking and causing the small amount of water. There is a gap in the weatherstripping. :P

Also, the reason I'm asking about the fuel filter is that I have a similar problem to Theobern, my 87 started chugging around a hundred KPH in passing gear. A very heavy chug, you could hear the engine bog right out, then all of a sudden pick up the RPM, then bog again. So I just quit accelerating as hard, keep it out of passing gear. However, accelerating like a grand mother, I hit a bit of a chug at 60KPH the other day on the way in to town. On the way home, I hit a chug at at around 40kph and actually stalled right out. The car fired up again as soon as I touched the key and ran like a dream. I limped home around twenty kph, being about two minutes from home as it was.

I recently dropped my tank and repaired a hole, I think I might have picked up some rust from the inside of the tank while banging it around putting it back in. Any thoughts?

If it has a carb the filter will be in the fitting where the fuel line runs into it.

On water in floorboard you will need to test to see if it is engine coolant or just rain water.
Is it sticky or sweet smelling?
Is rad low?

Re: Fuel Filter Location on a 1987 Caprice Classic?

As MT-2500 correctly stated, the fuel filter is behind the large nut on the carburetor, that the fuel line connects to.

If it were the V6 with its EFI, it'd be under the car near the fuel tank.

If the heater core was leaking, you'd have a wet floor, but you'd also smell engine coolant and in cold weather, your windshield will fog up if you turn the heater on.

If your core is busted you'll no it, there will be one god awful smell when you run the heater. Atleast thats what I ran into when mine went out.

Re: Fuel Filter Location on a 1987 Caprice Classic?

Every now and then, I will get a whiff of engine coolant inside the car, but as of now (and for the last two years) there's no wet floor and the radiator coolant level is unchanged over the last three months since I flushed the cooling system out. I just know that it's on the verge, so I better go pick up a replacement core. A core for the old Pontiac cost me $22 a few years ago, I can't see this one costing much more and as a bonus - it's easy to replace! On the Pontiac, I had to remove the hood and passenger fender in order to remove the evaporator housing, and then unbolt the unit under the dashboard to pull the heater core out. It was a day-long affair. On this car, one only needs to remove the hood gasket (runs parallel with the windshield), and some bolts which hold the top housing on. No removal of hoods, fenders, or under-dash components!

Re: Fuel Filter Location on a 1987 Caprice Classic?

Once you get your fuel filter out, take a close look at it. Normally they're just discolored, if you have anything coming off the tank you should see it on the filter.

If you have the room, you might want to install a good inline gas filter that you can change easily, plus it will catch more junk before the carb filter. I like to use these Holley units, they unscrew and use the old Ford type 6-cylinder fuel pump filters, which are an east to get Fram part.
