I have a 96 4x4 chevrolet tahoe and right now im have an electrical problem When I put the tahoe in gear it blows the large 50A fuse killing my radio, wipers,A/C, and power windows. Ive already took it to an electrical shop they checked the whole vehicle and said it was fine that the problem was somewhere from the 4x4 switch to the transmission itself I have done some homework on this and found out there are alot of parts from the switch to tranny was hoping someone could give me some info or if they had a similar problem

Welcome to AF on your first post. When you say in gear are you refering to transmission in gear or the 4 wheel drive shift in gear? The 4 wheel drive part or switches does not use a 50 amp fuse. The short is someplace else. Best to get a good wiring diagram and start checking what is hooked to that 50 amp fuse. MT

Power distributions goes like this..battery, mega fuse, maxi fuse, braches off to fused circuits. If the 50 amp is blowing and not the fused circuits, the problem is on the feed from the maxi (50a) fuse to the fuse box where the fused branch circuits are located

Re: 4x4 electrical problem 96 tahoe
Need to know exactly which 50a fuse is blowing. There are at least 2 of them. Look on the inside of the cover or in your owners manual to identify it,

So, if none of those fuses are blowing the problem lies between the IGN B fuse to the IGN switch or from the IGN switch to the IP fuse block. My thought is that you have a chaffed wire in the column and when you move the shift lever it's grounding the feed from the IGN B fuse and blowing it. Here's something you can try. Move the ign switch one position, from locked towards start. This the OFF position. None of that stuff is powered. You should be able to move the shift lever. Does the fuse blow? If not turn the key one more click to "run". Move the shift lever (probably have to step on the brake). Does it blow then? Let us know...........Steve

Re: 4x4 electrical problem 96 tahoe
OK: It really sounds like it's in the column. Need to get in there and look for brown and orange wires coming from the ign switch. Keep in mind that the wire colors may be different on your '96 as I'm looking at a '98 manual. In any case I bet you'll find some bare wires. Because of the air bag system I highly recommend using someone with experience in that area. Good luck to you.

Re: 4x4 electrical problem 96 tahoe
I am having the same fuse blow on my 95 Suburban. As soon as I turn the ignition switch the fuse blows. I traced through the wiring and can't find anything shorting out. Is it possible that the switch might be shorting internally? All the ip fuses are fine. It's just the maxi fuse that keeps blowing. I don't want to spend $150 on a new switch really and have it not be the problem.

Re: 4x4 electrical problem 96 tahoe
99 tahoe parking light/instrument pannel fuse blows. 176,000 miles no electrical or mechanical problems or wrecks in past. Someone said it could be a bad resistor with heat sink under dash. I found the part but don,t know how to check it. Ohm meter shows no reading when touching the contacts. Help please.
