If your vehicle has floating brake calipers (most do these days), then even if your rotors are very worn, because the caliper and hence the brake pad can track the rotor as it turns, your brakes should still perform uniformly. However, what you are describing sounds like fixed calipers and very worn rotors because if fixed, the calipers can't move to track the wear in the rotors as they rotate. All of this should show up in the steering wheel though, so the next step is to take a look at the calipers and make sure that i. if they are the floating type, that they can move freely on their slides and ii. in any case that the caliper piston(s) are free to move also. While you are there and if you can borrow one, use a dial guage to check the run out and wear of the rotors.

Re: 97 740il shakes when brake @ low speed

Well. my power steering fluid is full. i constantly check along with everything else. AND. The other day i was braking from a high speed, and the shaking was really bad, and i Did feel it in the brake pedal. So possibly all those other times i could have felt it and just never noticed. any other diagnosis before i take the tires off and check out the stuff?

Do Not Turn 740il Rotors

Every pad change get new rotors. Per BMW. Are cars are heavy and cause alot of friction(heat). You may get away with it on the rear but never up front. If your rotors were warped all the turning does is shave each side to flat, but when you do that you no longer have two equal sides to the rotor. This will give it weak areas and will warp again. You know buy owning the 740IL(I have the same Model any year) that you must pay to play!

Re: 97 740il shakes when brake @ low speed

I think I have found the solution to this problem, I replaced the factory rotors with performance rotors that has been slot drilled , and has lifetime warranty against warping.

So far no shaking at any speed car riding great.
