Red face Found a turbo for sale...

Tell me what you guys think:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...MakeTrack=true

Is there anything I should be aware of when buying a used turbo? I think it looks damn good, but you still never know. I also sent the guy a message about the turbo and I'm waiting to get a reply.

Re: Found a turbo for sale...

It does not say if there is any shaft play in it. I would really make sure about that. Also i see you have a 2g turbo car, so everything else in that bid is worthless to you.

So not sure if i would pay what ever the reseve price is for a T-28 since the starting bid is $250.

Also not to mention this guy has only sold 1 item!!! I do not like that. Beware of new sellers. I see he has been a member since 05 but never has done anything with ebay until now.

Re: Found a turbo for sale...

I did send him a message and shaft play was one thing I asked him about. I also do need the intercooler because mine has a hole in it that's big enough for me to fit my finger into. I guess if I do decide to bid and I win I dont think it woud be a bad thing to have all those spare parts. I also did see that he only ever sold one item, but this guy dosent really seem shady to me. I mean of the one thing he did sell got a good review and he also took a pic of the receipt.

Re: Found a turbo for sale...

Well if you could use the other parts then it may be worth it to you, if you think he is legit then go for it, IMO tho i do not deal with people that low in rating. New T-28's go for like $800 so you could really get a good deal there hopefully

Re: Found a turbo for sale...

Here is the message the seller replyed with:

As I stated in the description, the turbo is just under 2 years old and has less than 10,000 miles of use on it. All the accessories have ~ 10,000 miles of use on them and are ~ 2 years old as well. In regards to turbo shaft play, there is some forward and back play (inherent to some degree in a Journal bearing arrangement) in the turbine shaft but very little side to side play. Once you prime the turbo with oil the play is reduced almost completely. You will also notice what looks like a damaged compressor blade, but in reality it is a shaving on the top leading edge for balancing and marking the heavy side of the wheel. The compressor wheel looks to be in great shape. I always waited at least 2 minutes after a boosted run before I cut off the car to insure good oil cool down and lubrication of turbo. I never used over 13 pounds of boost which is just under the max of 14 that is safely allowed (Used Hallman boost controller and boost gage. The car also did not burn more than a quarter of a quart of oil every 2,000 miles (between oil changes) which is quite a bit less than you would expect for a car that had 142,000 miles on it before the restoration. I also cleaned the Intercooler and piping of oil when the system had ~ 5,000 miles on it. I finally realized that I was getting considerable oily blow through from my crank case vent through the valve cover and stopped that problem with a puralator gas filter inline between the valve cover and the intake snorkel.

In regards to price, I would like to get a minimum of $300.00 for the system. I really think that this price is quite a bargain when you consider just how expensive a new turbo is by itself! I hope that I have answered your questions sufficiently.

Sound good???

Re: Found a turbo for sale...

Does anyone think the shaft play could be an issue? Please leave a comment...

Re: Found a turbo for sale...

In and out shaft play is just as bad. If it goes too far in towards the housing, the wheel will start to actually hit the housing, ruining both the wheel and housing. I would say it's a no go unless you're ready for a turbo re-build.

Re: Found a turbo for sale...

Re: Found a turbo for sale...

I wouldn't chance that turbo... I b/l side to side shaft play ( a little) is fine, but in and out, I b/l that means the bearing journals are worn out (IIRC)...

I've got a 50-trim that has some side to side, but with oil it tightens up a bit...

Re: Found a turbo for sale...

I have a T3/T04E that has some side to side play and it rubs on the compressor housing. Very little side to side is fine, but anything that you can "measure" is too much.
