98 rodeo timing questions

my friend has the 2.2. had bent valves after the timing belt came off. replaced both idler pulleys and bought a remanufactured head. the head came with both camshafts new. looking at the front of the engine. which camshaft has the exhaust pully and which has the intake pulley? he had it running but said it was rough. i suspect the the pulleys are incorrect, bad gas (been sitting eight months), plugged injector, or 180* out of time. BTW, all new gaskets were installed and everytihng torqued to specs. can anyone help here? and even help on how to set the timing? (i know #1 cylinder TDC) but whats the easiest (read cheapest) way to find #1 on compression stroke? please help!
