2004 Sable/Gasoline fill

Hi, not a major issue by any means. I was just wondering if anyone else has problems when filling up with gasoline (besides the cost)? When the automatic fill cuts off you can still force feed close to 4 gallons of fuel in the tank. One of the main design complaints of my 96 Sable was the 16 gallon tank, now I have a 2004 with an 18 gallon fuel tank with only 14 usable.
If I fill it up myself, once it kicks off you can get another $10 worth in there but it takes awhile. Anyone else have that problem?

Re: 2004 Sable/Gasoline fill

I have a 98 Sable Wagon and after checking, am able to add another 5 Gallons after the kickoff (up to the fuel cap opening) however, with a tank that full comes a very real danger that if you are rear ended and the tank is impacted, the tank will split or explode since there is no room for expansion. Over filling may also mess with any pollution (fume recycling) equipment although I am no expert on this it would seem that its purpose is to recycle fumes rather than raw fuel in any quantity. If you must overfill then keep a few bags of hot dogs and marshmallows handy ;-)).

Re: 2004 Sable/Gasoline fill

My 2001 is similiar, but when it clicks off I can get between 1 and 1.5 gallons in to top it off. One thing I noticed when I had a similiar problem with my Pontiac minivan, was that if you put the nozzle full into the cap up to the rubber splash guard on the handle, it will not fill. I just put to the bend in the fill handle tube into the spout and it fills it most the way up, then I squeeze it half way down to get the remaining gallon in.

I also had a car once that had a kink in the rubber hose that joins the fill tube to the gas tank. Required cutting it out (after running the car near out of gas and parking on an incline away from the fill port) and putting a new piece of hose in (fuel line grade of course) and clamping it down. You may want to have a look see and make sure thats not the case. Just my .02.

That is a good point, I will look into that. Thanks umina!!!
