Angry Alternator/battery problems

i just recently changed my alternator about two months ago and everything has been fine, no power loss, the charge battery light and brake light have not come on, nothing has gone wrong until today while driving a saw the brake light and the charge battery light flicker a couple of times and then they stayed lit. When i rev the engine to about 2500 rpm the charge light and battery light disappear but when the engine comes back down to an idle the lights come back on. next i charged my battery for a couple of minutes and started the car back up, everything was fine, then i heard a change in the sound of the idle(it got louder) and the charge light and the brake light came back on. I just changed the alternator 2 months ago, the battery is pretty much new, i dont know what it could be, if u have an idea please respond.

Re: Alternator/battery problems

It's not unheard of for parts to fail out of the box. Sounds like the alternator is going again. Check all the connections in the charging system for corrosion and tightness. Make sure the drive belt is adjusted correctly and not slipping. Make sure your idle rpms are at spec. If it's all ok, measure the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running. Should be greater than 13.5 vdc. Anything lower is an indication the alternator isn't putting out enough voltage to charge the battery. Might want to make sure the alt and brake lights are on when you do this.

Wherever you bought it from will test it for you to confirm. Should get a free replacement. If for whatever reason you can't take it back or it was used, take it to an Autozone or similar and they will test if for free.

Re: Alternator/battery problems

If its fine when you rev the engine up, its probably the belt not being tight enough. Is it squealing at all, especially when you start it?
Rule of thumb: At the center of the belt, it should deflect inward about (distance between pulleys)/64.
