What are the best mufflers?

Hello im in the market for buying new mufflers. I have been looking and have some questions. Im trying to get the most flow/horsepower/and good loud sound. This is for street driving. I have found a few but i have questions the flowtech warlock racing bypass muffler has two outlet pipes one that comes straight from the cat converters would this be too loud for the street? my friend said that there would be allot of smoke coming out from it - is that true? I am also looking at any glass pack mufflers any imput on those? if you have any mufflers you think i should get just let me know. heres the link for the warlock http://www.racepages.com/performance...5&brandid=2793 thanks for any help

Re: What are the best mufflers?

For power glasspacks would be better since they flow better than chambered mufflers. And I have no idea why getting new mufflers and cat back would make smoke come out of your exhaust. BTW what car are you putting them on?

Re: What are the best mufflers?

It really comes down to personal preference.
The link below compares the power difference in a few popular mufflers,
along with their measured sound levels (decibels, or Db).
No it is NOT a flow comparision, it is actual power from dynos,
all on the same vehicle with the same setup except for the mufflers (obviously).

i like the force pro series mufflers from jegs, basically, they are flowmasters, but, are $32, dont sound as raspey and dont pop as much, and IMO have an BETTER build quality

Re: What are the best mufflers?

While I do agree that dyno numbers dont mean everything, the dyno is great for tuning. Where the power really shows is on the track if you can plant it. But, the link may have been helpful for the guy who started this thread.

Personally I have run flowmasters and several knock-offs. On my blower motor I ran dynomax race bullets. Now that I am going to a turbo I am running a magnaflow muffler. The flowmasters and knock-offs are great for an aggresive sounding stock car. The race bullets are awsome for all out performance where a muffler is required. But magnaflow or borla can get you a great looking muffler, that flows well, and makes power..along with being pretty quiet for driving high-powered cars on the street.

Re: What are the best mufflers?

mufflers themselves are going to make so little of difference in power that its really a matter of what sounds you like better

Thats exactly right, in most applications. One you get into the full out race side of things making huge power mufflers alone can make a big difference in the tune. For instance: Tim Huspen a big drag radial racer had to make a big change in his tune when he swapped the flowmasters for a straight thrue muffler. At the time he was running mid 8's in the 1/4 I think and had to drop down 5 jet sizes in his carb to get the afr back where it used to be. I cant remember how much power that swap gained him but overall, he ended the season running 8.teens I beleive. But he has a F2 maxed out on a blow thru 357w making huge power. But, to get back on topic for most people looking to gain a little pep in their step with stock cars one muffler to the next wont really change a thing.

Re: What are the best mufflers?

I have seen a difference of 15hp, from a controlled enviroment dyno shootout between aftermarket mufflers, so there is a hp change. This was on a 300hp(ish) Stang.

Yeah you could see a noticeable difference from switching from bad flowing mufflers to good flowing ones if you have enough power. But for low powered cars that only make like 200 hp mufflers don't make a big difference.

Re: What are the best mufflers?

Yep, a 10 hp change at 200hp, is the same as a 15hp change at 300hp, right We are talking %
