4 wheel hub
I have a 97 Tracker with Aluminum Mags. The black hubs on the front wheels where it used to say 4 wheel drive or what ever (it's been so long since it did I don't remeber what it said) corroded and the paint came off and Chevy replaced them out of warranty once. They said they don't know why it happened but they are not just a cover they are the 4 wheel drive bearings or what ever and they were $500 a pice years ago plus labor. Now it would be $2000 to replace them. They have corroded again. I have been told it was the chemical reaction of the brake dust and the aluminum rims that cause this but Chevy still says they don't know why it does this and won't help unless I pay big $$$$$$. I'm afraid that the hubs will disenigrate and I'll be in big trouble. Any ideas or has anyone seen this.
Also the car is Silver Sage metallic (wa218) in color and they don't make the touchup paint anymore. Guess I bought the wrong car in the wrong color. I bought it new in 97. Thanks, Mike |

Re: 4 wheel hub
I don't know anything about the hub but if you have a paint supply place near you they can match the color. My tracker is faded (previous owner didn't take good care of it) and they were able to match the paint to the fading. its crazy how that worked.

Re: 4 wheel hub
Water, salt and mixing different types of bearing grease can cause this. Forget about the brake dust theory. Replace the bearings youself. Front bearings and seals for both wheels only cost about $130 at O'reilly's.
