99 Grand Prix thermostat replacement - 3100 engine

I am trying to replace the thermostat on my 1999 Grand Prix.

I have removed the front bolt from the thermostat cover/housing and notice that the back bolt has a notch cut out of it and assume that I do not need to remove the bolt all the way out to get the thermostat housing off of the thermostat. BUT, so far it seems that I can not get the thermostat cover to clear the top of the thermostat becuase the exhaust manifold and heat shield are in the way. I need about another 1/4" of clearance before the thermostat cover will clear the top of the thermostat and come off.

I can't believe that GM was expecting anyone to remove the exhaust manifold to replace the thermostat or am I just missing something simple to get the thermostat cover off?!

Please help!

Try removing the exhaust crossover heat shield. The thermostat housing bolts are not that long. And use the right tools.
