1998 2.2 rough running on cold start
When my 98 2.2 sits overnight and then I start it up the next morning, it runs rough for about 20 or 30 seconds, then smooths out. It is not that cold here but is below freezing. I haven't had to add any antifreeze or coolant and I can't see huge amounts of white smoke to indicate a leaking head gasket. The engine was rebuilt about 100,000 kms ago due to a leaking head gasket. The coolant level stays the same and doesn't fill up the resivoir or look like it is going down. Maybe a fuel problem? I will do a pressure test of the cooling system to eliminate the head gasket thing but I am quite sure that that isn't it. Any answers???

Re: 1998 2.2 rough running on cold start
How long has it been since you tuned it up? IF you tuned it up, did you use good parts or Bosch JUNK?

Re: 1998 2.2 rough running on cold start
It hasn't been that long but I am now suspecting a plug or plug wire. I do not use Bosch plugs, I use AC Delco. Sometimes the car does it , sometimes not, really weird, but mostly when it is outside and cold. In the garage it doesn't seem to be a problem. Funny thing but when it is cold it is worse. Still not sure what it is. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a bad plug wire or coil. Both will act up when exposed to moisture.

Re: 1998 2.2 rough running on cold start
Looks like it is the head gasket after all. I warmed it up real good, then let it sit overnight in the garage, then I took my plugs out and looked into the cylinders with my scope and the tops of the pistons on cylinders # 1 and #2 were wet with coolant. Not a whole lot but just enough to let me know there is a leak. I curved the scope up to look around the top sealing surface of the gasket and it was wet. So its either remove and replace or try some of the head gasket sealer that CRC or Bar's Leaks makes. Just for kicks I am going to try the "mechanic in a can" stuff from Bar's Leaks, whats to lose, I know its got to come apart if it doesn't work, but maybe it will......for a while.
