01 Impala LS pointer shows full-empty tank. What is problem?

Need help:
Gaz pointer on the dash shows "full tank" and jumps to "empty tank". They told me to open the trank and under the carpet I need to replace a sensor for $80 backs. What kind of sensor is that and do I need and how exactly it called to ask in the auto store it?
Or maybe here is other reason my pointers says "empty and full tank"?
Do i need to replace the tank or car or to stop driving at all?. Or maybe I have to go to a church and to put there 10 candles for the God and for the America, heh-heh-heh?....
Please tell me asap I need to fix it asap bymyself I will try in Alexandria VA< where is a chevy parts store to buy it?
So, I am thinking what to do , but if your guys can help me I would be happy, thanks

its called a fuel pump

No leaking in the tank! Also i had put 20 candles in the church (joke!)
I understood, thanks to all, it was fuel pump and level that swims in the tank connected.
I understood I need to replace this thing shown in the link. You told it cost 180 or 80$.
Where to order for $80? Please help me you know link online order, but i don't/ What name of link to order this?
Then probably I can try to fix bymyself as 2 things before I fixed for $8-00 (I spent it to buy beer before the "great work" ) in place of $500 or vore for both i estiomated for my turn singal died and ABS didn't work. Now they work like chinese food line! and 100 %! It were reason not working just ... CONTACTS and i fixed them after reccomendations and advices here in the forum!

So, the forum helped my much! Still if some one tell me where online to buy the fuel pump for chevy impala ls 3.8 2001 for $80- but not for $180 or whatever, it would be just perfect!
