1995 Escort Wagon stalls in park

Have a 1995 Escort Wagon 1.9 automatic that will stall while in park. This happens when it’s both cold and hot, but worse when it’s hot. If the car is put in gear with the brake on it idles normally. There may be a surge in RPM’s before it stalls, but not always. The surging will normally happen when it’s cold, not hot. When it’s hot, it just stalls unless in gear.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a 95 wagon that stalled at stop also.
