2002 Town & Country TRAC System

I just purchased a 2002 T&C EX which came with the TRAC system installed. The owners manual doesn't say much about it. When I first turn the key on the TRAC "off" light comes on as a check. Then when I start the car the light goes out so it appears to me that I am in the TRAC mode all the time. I can push the button on top of the steering column and the TRAC "off" light will then come on and stay on until I shut the engine off. When I set the TRAC button to off, while driving, I assume that I am then driving without TRAC. I am wondering if it would have anything to do with gas mileage. Should I be leaving the TRAC system "on" or according to the manual in "standby" which appears to be the way it operates unless I manually shut it off? Any help or info?

Re: 2002 Town & Country TRAC System

The electronic traction control is a computerized system that monitors wheel rotation, much in the same way as the antilock brake system. Normally the system is turned on unless you manually override and turn if off (trac off light lit). This system has no effect on gas milage. It helps keep the tires in contact with the road during engine acceleration with icy or wet conditions but doesn't do much in fair weather. When you put your foot on the brake, the ABS system takes over if any wheel locks up. I would just leave it on and forget about it. However, if you like to do "burn outs", you will have to turn if off to get the smoke.
