99 GrandAm close to empty...won't take gas...HELP
Okay...I'm new to the forums...
Have a question. I just purchased this vehicle from a dealer 2 weeks ago. I need to fill up (filled up 3 days ago and it was fine)... NOW... I try to fill up tonight (close to E) and after 30 cent's worth of gas put in.. it starts back flowing. I look in where I put the gas... and it's acting as if the tank is full... I KNOW it's not full... Anyone have this happen to them? Thanks for any and all responses!

I'm not trying to sound like an idiot but a lot of the time when filling my 01 if you use the auto thingy on the pump handle, mine will click immediately. Other than that I would try a clothes hanger very carefully and see if there is something plugging the hole. Also check to make sure that the metal flap flips open.
Let us know whats goin on man and we'll do our best to help you out!!

I hav had this happening latly on my GT.
Seems that the station I go to has installed a new pump handle. Now I cant put the whole nossle end into the neck, it just keeps stoping. So I stand thier and hold it ![]() Last time I left it on auto, it didnt stop when it was full ..... ![]() maybe try a different pump.

Re: 99 GrandAm close to empty...won't take gas...HELP
I have had that prob, before in the winter. And its always because people top off. On a pump when it auto clicks off and people keep clicking to squeez that extra couple of cents in that extra couple of cents is not actually going into the persons car. The fuel is actually backing up into the vapor recovery system, those tiny holes at the tip of the nozzle are for the vapor recovery. and the gas then goes into those holes and after so many people do that, it will either cause the auto shut off to fail or possibly what you have had happens here will happen.

I dont think that was his trouble jogara.
I have noticed several stations with new nozles that do this. It either that or that the stations upped the pumps to pump the gas faster. You have to set it in the gas fill tube just right or it just kicks out. Just my

Re: 99 GrandAm close to empty...won't take gas...HELP
When I bought my Trans Am, used, I had to literally let the fuel trickle into the tank or it would just shut off. I eventually figured out that there was a five ft long peice of 1/2" dia siphon hose jambed down into the filler pipe. I used a long extension and screwed a lag bolt into the hose and pulled it out. I still have a slight problem with filling the tank and after research on the net I found out that there were lots of people with a similar problem and they would just hold the nozzle nearly upside down and the fuel would flow in just fine. This may be an issue with the nozzle and not the vehicle cause I have had some work fine but most would not.
One other thing, there is a Fuel Limiter Vent Valve on top of the tank that supposedly can cause this condition although I have not personally had any experience with it. |

Re: 99 GrandAm close to empty...won't take gas...HELP
I had this same problem but it only seemed to happen when it was really cold out, If I fill up in the middle of the day it's fine but when I try it late at night or early morning it will stop if I used the automatic thing and even if I hold it. It then started to spit the gas back up if I put it in to quick. I literally had to go 3 cents at a time and wait a few seconds in between. Took 10 min to put in $5. But if I want later on that day or the next afternoon the automatic thing worked just fine.

If you all look at the fill tube that runs to the tank,
you will notice how small it is. Almost the same size as the nozzle on the pump, so if the fuel isnt going into the tank, it backs up and shuts off the pump. I have the same problem once in a while. Big pain when you need to fill up an empty tank. Click! Click !...... Click! ![]() The best way I found was to not open the nozzle full blast ![]() Good Luck !
