th200c failure replace the th200?

The th200c (lockup trans) failed in my 87 oldsmobile. I got a good used trans from online but I didn't realize it was a th200 (non-lockup) till I got it.

The reason I believe it is a th200 is it looks like the th200c that I pulled out of my olds but there is one less pin on the connector that is on drivers side of the trans. There are three pins on the 87 trans and two on the one I got online (missing pin is for lockup soliniod?).

My question is, Will the ecm throw codes for lack off a tcc soliniod? If so, Is there any way to trick the ecm?

You will get code 39, but so what, if this is the cheapest way out for you.

How do the guys that swap five speeds into thier g-body cars get away with it?

What else changes when the torque converter is locked / not locked? Is it just the torque converter or is the timing changed also?

Can I change the th200 to a th200c by using parts from the failed trans?

The reverse clutch came apart in the 200c, so it was a hard failure. Can I just take the valve body off of the the 200c, fully clean it, and put it into the th200? or is there more to it?

No the pump is different, trans input shaft also. Fix the 200 reverse clutch hub very common, same issues occur with reverse on the 200c.

Ok, I'm officially lost.

I thought the trans was a th200 when I got it because on the four position connect on the drivers side only has two pins in it. On the th200c from my 87 the connector has three pins on it.

You say the input shaft is different. When I did some looking around on the web I found that the non-lockup converters have are for 30 spline input shafts and the lockup ones are 27 spline.

I went out and counted the splines on both the inner and outer shafts of both transmissions. 27 splines on all of the shafts.

Now the person I bought the replacement trans from said it came from a v6 86 Buick regal. Its should be a th200c, correct? Should have been the same as my the trans in my Oldsmobile, correct?

I'm wondering if on has a temp sensor and one does not.

The trans I bought also looks to have been rebuilt at one time. The fluid is very clean and it has a newer seal for the converter shaft.

There is a tag on the new trans with a sticker also.

The sticker reads:
4BHh (h is a little H about half the size)
61 4BH h

Tag reads:
84-bh-345108



The tag on the old trans read like this:

125 (about in the middle just above the pin that hold it on)

Look for a seal and a hole on the end of the input shaft, this would be a lock up unit, the hole is straight down the middle of the input. My 84 Cutlass Supreme had a 200c in it.

I'll look and take pics of both transmissions when I get home. What I can't find is a diagrams online of the connector on the drivers side of the trans. What posistions are a,b,d,anc c? Are the two lockup pins dirrectly above each other?

I did read that the noticeable differance between a th350 and the th350c is that there is no 4 posistion connector on the drivers side of the th350. I wonder is that goes the same for the th200.

I also read that the th200 was stopped being made in 1979 and the th200c took over. The trans I bought has a date code of 84 which would make it a 200c.

Yes, 84 is a 200c from any mid or full size GM car.

Ok I found out what the missing wire is. The 87 200c has a third gear pressure switch. The 84 does not have it, hence the missing pin.

If I put the 84 trans into my 87 the converter won't lock up due to no signal from the pressure switch.

I'm going to try to swap the valve bodys.

Do you know of any instructions that are online that show how the clean the transmission valve body?

The 84 uses engine load/speed to engage lock up so the pcm is different.. ATSG manual is the best for this procedure.
