How do I disengage my antitheft system if it kicks in?

I just purchased a 2002 mercury mountaineer, and got stuck in a store parking lot with it for quite a while yesterday, as when i went to put the key in and turn it, the antitheft system kicked in, and the key locked up and wouldnt turn!! I tried everything, unlocking doors, locking doors, wiggling the parking gear, turning on the horn alarm on the remote, and nothing would work. After about 15 minutes, when I was about to give up, I gave it one more try, and it just happened to give, and turned for me. I dont know if I happened to do something right, on a fluke, or if it just happened to work after awhile or what. Does anyone know what to do if this happens again?? I'd GREATLY appreciate any info!! Thanks in advance!! Bunnie

Re: How do I disengage my antitheft system if it kicks in?

The anti-theft system will not lock the key cylinder, it just disables the electrical system from starting the car.

It sounds like what happened to you was a jam in the steering lock, maybe the wheels were against a parking block/stop, or the vehicle rolled a bit after you turned the key off and put it in park.

Next time that happens, try cranking the steering wheel in a direction it will turn, and while holding the steering wheel away from the steering lock, turn the key to "Run."

Thank you so much!!! I definitely think youre right on about the problem, as when I think about it, that's what I noticed when this happened, as that the steering wheel was locked up, and wouldnt turn; I just assumed it was the antitheft because the antitheft button kept blinking off and on. (I know, I am a dummy when it comes to cars. lol) Thanks again, and I will definitely try your advice next time (let's hope there isnt a next time!! lol) it happens. Bunnie
