More info on oil burning
Apparently now Isuzu is recommending 15w40 for engines with excessive oil burning.

Isuzu has always been pretty liberal in regards to recommended viscosity ranges. I know the 2002 and 2003 manuals say 15w-40 and 20w-50 are perfectly fine to use in temps of 10degF and above.

Same for the '97 manuals; IIRC, my '91 Rodeo (different engine) had pretty wide ranges of approved viscosities as well.
Personally though, I feel that a 5w-40 or a 10w-40 is thick enough; but I've never tried a 15w-40 in this 3.2L engine so I don't know. Be quite a while before I feel the need to use such a thick oil.
