Easy way to figure out the bad ABS sensor

I have the ABS light on in my 98 Isuzu rodeo 2 wheel drive. Being that the sensors for the front at $100+ each, I was wondering if someone knew how to figure out the bad one without buying two.

Do you have a logic probe? You can monitor the sensors to see if they switch when the reluctor teeth pass the sensor face.

For the rodeo ABS system you short pins 4 & 12 on the OBDII DLC port & count the *flashes* of the ABS dash light to decode. I have a .pdf on this from one of the fine board members.

you have broken wires at a connector near the frame right in front of the left rear wheel cut out the connector and solder the wires together

Re: Easy way to figure out the bad ABS sensor

2eye is probably right since he is an Isuzu mechanic/technician. If the problem is where he says it is, it sounds like the rear sensor on the differential may be the problem. Here's the link to the ABS codes

http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/files/ABS%20DTC.pdf

It should still work. Good Luck and let us know what you find and what you did to fix it.

Re: Easy way to figure out the bad ABS sensor

Rodeo02 is going to be sending me a pdf file. I will look at that to see what it has to offer. If that doesn't work then I will do as 2eyefishclaw has suggested.

I thought that the ABS sensors were only in the front though. Is this not the case?

Re: Easy way to figure out the bad ABS sensor

Well, I guess I screwed up the link but if you copy it and paste into your browser, it will take you to the pdf.

And there are three sensors -- one on each front wheel and one on the rear differential. Having one on each rear wheel would probably be better but since most of these Rodeos have limited slip rear ends, I guess both rear wheels spin at the same speed, even on slick surfaces.

Good luck and, again, please let us know what you found and what you did to fix it. We learn from each other.

Re: Easy way to figure out the bad ABS sensor

Just wanted to give an update to this.

I crawled under my Rodeo and looked for the connector 2eye said would be broken. Sure enough, I found 3 wires and a connector sitting there broken. I tried to take pics for everyone but my stupid camera would not work.

So here is what I did.

The connector is on the driver's side between the gas tank and the frame. First I removed the left rear tire for easier access. Then I disconnected the wire at the differential (there is a connector there too). I then removed every fastner there was so I could completely remove the wire that was from the differential to the broken connector. I then cut the old connector off and solder the wires. I then solder the other end that was still connected to the car. After both were good to go, I solder them together. Shrinked the tube I put on and reconnected it to the differential. Refasten everything and put the tire back on. Took it for a short drive like 3 houses down the street and the light went off. Now no more light.

Thanks 2eye and everyone else for the tips and help.

I have learned a lot from this site and plan to help in any way I can.

Re: Easy way to figure out the bad ABS sensor

Is this the same wiring for '97s? I can't remember what direction the wire goes after the harness on the pumpkin... I'll have to look later... I haven't had the RrABS light since the rains stopped.

EDIT: Similar setup, but runs up the passenger side. There is a small harness there, too. I'm going to seal it up well and try to protect it from moisture and see if that RrABS light ever comes on again.

Re: Easy way to figure out the bad ABS sensor

So basically you just eliminated the middle (broken) connector by soldering the wires together? I have had the same problem for a while.

exactly. I cut out the connector and just soldered the wires together. The connector should have been supported. If it was, I doubt this would have happened.

Hi, I know this is an old thread but this is the only forum I found the answer for this problem, just wanted to ask you if is the same for a 95 rodeo, if not where is located so I can turn this light off, it's driving me crazy.

thanks a lot
