Morgan 3 wheeler - the most fun with my clothes on for ages!
Hi folks - this may not fit in too well with all your Ferraris and Lambos but I thought I'd post it anyway.
This is a 1/16 Gakken Morgan - I love these old 1/16 kits because they are so inaccurate and leave us with so much to do. (this one took over 3 months) The first two weeks were taken up converting the wheels to wire. These cars had 16inch wheels and the model is exactly the same length as my Revell 612 Scaglietti!- (just in case anyone thinks 1.16 is a large scale!) Unfortunately the RHD side of the sliding pillar suspension was broken off in the kit which left me with no option but to make another .....so why not make it work? Here's a shot of the working damper on the left and the parts for the other side - the compression spring (seen right central) was cut down to .5cm) - the #11 knife blade I hope gives some idea of scale. Now the suspension works realistically. The kit is of a 1935 Super Sport (SS) which had a spare wheel mounted almost vertically on the rear and was known as a barrelback. I much prefer the more streamlined beetleback design and so changed this one using fibreglass tissue. The rear, from the seat back, was remodelled in two pieces from balsa wood and then covered with fibreglass tissue and car body filler. The balsa was then hacked out with various router bits using my Dremel to make the shell which was then grafted onto the chopped body - something like this.... which resulted in this Just to complete the model a little detail was added - three cables from the hand controls (L-R ignition advance/retard, fuel mixture and hand throttle) - the cables for the sequental gear selector and hand brake on the front wheels (the foot brake operated the rear) were also added. The floors are polished .5mm veneer as is the dash and the instrument bezels are machine turned. The mudguards have been cut down to more resemble the more sporty Aero model and the aero screens (which fold and have wooden bases) were made in place of the wrap-around screen which I never liked. So here's couple more pics - the most fun I've had with my clothes on for ages! Hope you like it too! Cheers and Merry Christmas to you all! |

Quite the amazing model, and a very cool and original subject too. I can see why it was so much fun.

Another great build, Martin!
Super subject and the execution is flawless as usual. The bodywork you did is impeccable. BTW Do you really drive an MGB? Can I PM you with some questions?

Hi Martin,
That looks amazing, and great to see it finished How easy was it to join / blend the new rear panels to the existing bodywork? Paul

Hi Paul - the conversion was easier than I thought it would be. As long as you work with the internal measurements for the balsa shapes it marries up OK - did it with the fibreglass tissue on the inside.
Stevenski - you have a PM Martin |

Looks very good. I like the new look with the rearend.
I've seen this model in my LHS and has been wanting to get my hands on it but I always ended up buying other models.
