Thinking about remote start

I was thinking about getting a remote starter for my 99 contour se sport 2.5 L.

Does anyone know what I need other than the essentials, like a part to override the anit-theft or anything else? About how much are we talking?

If it werent for contour.org, this branch would be helpless. Theres more threads regarding this on contour.org. Like ive said numerous times. We have over 6 years of archived threads that you can search.

What you trying to do? Keep that site going??? Those posts are over 4 years old. Don't do the "hide a key" trick. That's the Circuit City way. For the past few years many makers have made bypasses that don't require you to give up an extra key.


JS, you trying to do this yourself? If not, plan on paying about $250 for a good one with a good warranty, range, keyless, and bypasses. Of course this all depends on where you live too. DIY, you'll pay about $125 but usually the units won't be that great or will be refurbs or such.

Keep contour.org going? Are u serious? As far as im concerned the knowledgebase here on AF is a joke. Seriously, if it werent for myself and few others (who btw are from CEG) questions would go unanswered. Just trying to prove a point that if you want answers, contour.org is the only site to go to. Every question even conceived has been answered to the point of ad nauseum. I dont understand how people even register for this site honestly. Type in ford contour on yahoo or google and CEG is the first site to come up. Even fordcontour.org comes up before this.

If that's true then why is the links you posted so out of date they shouldn't be a source of good information? Everyone knows that you can use Ford keys in extreme cold conditions inside a bypass module. When they really get cold, they won't transpond a code so it's pointless to use them. That's way I posted about using the newer technology that's been out for a while now.

Like I said, if you want more information you can run a search yourself. Its all out there. Heres some newer threads for you regarding the bypass module. If you want threads regarding remote starters on MTX's and clutch disable switch, I can dig up plenty of those threads too.

Do you honestly think that a forum like AF that is dedicated to not one specific vehicle could possibly be better than a forum like CEG thats an a contour/mystique enthusiast forum?

Would you like me to go back and change the dates so your satisfied? Dont see how the information has changed in that time period. When you run a search on google, do you only believe information thats newer that a year old? Absolutely not! We both know thats absurd. If the information is accurate, use it. I agree about the AF site, but seeing as how CEG has people that own their own car audio/alarm businesses on that forum and know exactly what needs to be done with a remote start not to mention people that have a great knowledge of PATS, CEG is by far superior. We also have Ford engineers that actually designed the CDW-27 platform and drive Contours on CEG as well. They know better than anyone IMHO.

Uh, OK. Yeah, just like how the local Best Buy uses the same method as those stated in your links to bypass Ford systems only to have comebacks. Well, I guess it's OK because they then call me to fix the problem and I get to make a bunch of $$ for a method that's outdated.

I can see that you won't understand what I am trying to say so I'll state it one more time. YES, back in 2004 it was an acceptable method to use a key in a box to bypass the Ford system. HOWEVER, it was found out that in extreme weather conditions, this wasn't the most effective method because the "pellet" in the key would freeze and therefore would cause the remote start not to work. Alarm manufacturers then came out with an electronic bypass to do the same thing but without sacrificing a key inside the dash.

there is a way, but very undesirable, since it removes the anti-theft feature all-together, and will likely require the purchase and programming of an additional spare key.

Simply put, you hide a spare key up under the column, near the ignition lock. The transponder in the hidden key will keep the PATS system disabled all the time.

Like I said, I really don't recommend it, not only do you disable the system all the time, you leave a good key in aplace where a thief can easily get at it. Just buy the module if the remote start is that important.



This one says it all. Classic rigging at it's best. The great thing is if you do it this way, your car will go nuts and DROP ALL KEY CODES and the dealership will love it!

You could get a baby to eat your key...........if you dont get it you didnt read that baby post awhile back.
Or you could get a spare key,cut off the shank,trim up the handle and tie it to the key cylinder.This way its just defeating the PATS and not leaving a FULL key there.

The PATS bypass module provided with most aftermarket remote starters requires the use of an extra programmed key that is enclosed in the module, then installed somewhere under the dash.

So that means that even when using the bypass module, you are leaving a fully functional key in the vehicle.

So much for security....

Again, these posts are so out of date. In the aftermarket bizz, things change so fast it isn't even funny. I use CANBUS interfaces now. All I do is plug the module into my remote starter then one or two wires to the car and I'm done. It's a much more secure way than what's been posted in those links you provided.

For the second time now, refer to the last 2 links I posted that pertain EXACTLY to the bypass module WITOUT the extra key method.
