My 3000GT Story Continued

As some of you might remember, I was having some problem with my 92 SL. Well I just ordered the right TCU that has been pulled out of a 3S and has been rebuilt. I took my car into the autoshop at my school today, and what happens? Well I find out that I have a nocking rod. I had heard the sound before but thought it might be the lifters (lifter ticks). No only this but in cylinder 3 I have a compression of about 125.

So I have a few options:
-Get a used engine and drop it in
-Get compression fixed then sell
-Sell as is/part it out
-Drive it till it dies

I would like just to get rid of it and cut my losses, I would be happy with 2000 but more realistic is like 1200ish. Just wanted to see what you guys thought, thanks for all the help.

Re: My 3000GT Story Continued

Well, bad compression could be damaged valves, headgasket leak, worn piston ring. Kinda depends. I wouldn't want to trash an engine if it were only a head gasket leak. Were you burning coolant or oil?

As far as the rod knock, I'd drop the pan and find out what I'm looking at. I mean rod bearings aren't too hard to replace with the oil pan off, from what I've heard. You may need a new rod, and to machine the crank, but you may have gotten really lucky. Now if you have metal shavings in your oil, and hte bearing spun, you are most likely looking at a full rebuild.

Driving it till it dies, wont be that long, and you will only do more damage. So that's out the window. You can't just fix the compression and sell it with knock for anything more than you would for just selling it as is, so no real reason there either.

Basically you have to decide if you want to sell it as is, which will cost you most likely. Or replace/rebuild hte engine. If I had teh money, and was in your shoes, I'd probably look at is as the time for a forced upgrade. Rebuild it with lower compression pistons, and boost it. But that will cost you more obviously.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.
