Question ??oil in radiator fluid...

I have a 1999 Honda Civic CX Hatchback. It has over 200,000 miles on it. I have virutally had no problems with this car. However, I just learned that that there is oil in the radiator fluid. I did notice just before this past summer that my car was starting to over heat. Then I noticed that the radiator fluid was not being circulated throughtout the engine, so I changed the themostat. Still no circulation. I checked all the hoses and someone told me the water-pump may have gone out. It was when I was going to have the water-pump replaced that I was told about the oil in the radiator fluid. My questions are:
How serious is this?
How could this have happened?
Even though there is oil in the radiator fluid, why would the water-pump stop working?
Please help me.

Thank you.....

Re: ??oil in radiator fluid...

Could be a leaking head gasket or a crack in the head or block. The head gasket is relativly easy. Cracked head or block and you might as well toss the motor. The water pump could have gone out, causing the motor to overheat and that can cause a cracked head.

Safely, remove the radiator cap and run the engine. If you have a leaky gasket or cracked block, you will notice that radiator bubbling. If the problem was initiated by a failed water pump, you would've noticed it much earlier for some water leak or noise problem around the pump housing. At 200k miles, and with the apparent problems, I'd chuck it for a newer one.

Re: ??oil in radiator fluid...

oil in the radiator = cracked block or leaky head gasket.

my question here is.

what kind mechanic doesnt check the radiator or head gasket first before he goes about trying to diagnose an overheating problem, which lead him to go about changing the water pump instead???????

my answer is.......................a mechanic who doesnt know what he is doing

i sure hope you didnt pay for that water pump install :P

Just like politicians, doctors, lawyers and journalists, not very many mechanics are trustworthy.
