88 Pickup/ how easy to fix/parts

Hi, i have done a little research and what not, but i was just wondering how easy most repairs are. Also how easy or hard is it to find parts. I'm not for sure on the engine whether it is a 20r, 22r, or 22re. Oh yeah it is a 5 speed manual and is 4WD

It's not a 20R, they were 79-80. .

You could look at the sticker on the front of the valve cover, or see if it's carbed (22R) or EFI (22RE).

If it's 4WD it's probably a 22RE.

Parts are easy to find and repairs are easy if you have any experience.

Re: 88 Pickup/ how easy to fix/parts

Depending on how many miles the engine has on it, there could be a few things to look out for:

Any clatter from the timing chain cover just after startup - this indicates a worn timing chain, and/or guides.

I've heard of exhaust leak problems athe the exhaust manifold due to a cracked manifold or bad flange gasket. However, I have never had this happen to any of my trucks, and have only seen it once at the shop I work at.

If the transmission pops out of gear at all, the shifter seat and cup need to be replaced. Not too difficult, and costs about $30 in parts.

A big problem these have is crud building up in the intake manifold. Open up the throttle valve and take a peek. If you see alot of black buildup that looks like someone was eating brownies in there, clean it out as best ou can with throttle body / carb spray. An inductive intake cleaner that goes in through a vacuum port might also be good
