1997 3.8 auto tranny mustang, problem is when you shift from park to reverse the tires will chirp the garage floor everytime and the car jumps, the tranny was rebuilt but this problem was going on before the rebuilt tranny and is still going on after.shifting into drive its normal same with the other gears. any ideas thanks?

Re: mustang jumps when shifting from park to reverse

So it chirps the tires, the reverse gear maybe to small,so it gets power alot fast. I'd consider what I just said as a guess. But I see no problem with it chirping,if you don't want tire marks on the floor, park the car in backwards.

Yep,

Not much you can do. Sounds like the car just wants to let its hair down

Gears in the tranny may be smaller as he said, also the rear end may have a lower gear ratio. Have you had some work done on the rear end with aftermarket parts?

Re: mustang jumps when shifting from park to reverse

Is the car idleing abnormally high when you shift to reverse? Have you tried letting it warm up before you take it out of park? You said this was a problem both before and after the tranny rebuild. Has this car always done this or did it just start doing it one day? If so was anything on the car changed right before you started having this problem? Then again your car may just have a little extra spunk.

Re: mustang jumps when shifting from park to reverse

Another thought, 1st and reverse should have the same numerical gear ratio, try taking the car directly from park into 1st, not just drive and see if it does it. But move the shifter quick so it doesnt have time to hit any other gears before first.

Re: mustang jumps when shifting from park to reverse

check the oil level in the trans when trans is warm. sounds as if you have high oil pressure in the trans. is there a shift kit in that car?? or maybe the brakes dont work to the rear wheels causing the rear wheels to spin while the front ones have brakes stopping them.

Idle rpm should not spin the tires like that with or without the brake.
But I will agree on the high pressure, thats where I was going with the 1st gear test.

youre right correct idle speed should not cause the tires to spin, but the idle on this car maybe high as mentioned early. just a thought.(P.S to me even slightly high idle should not cause this)

Cool Re: mustang jumps when shifting from park to reverse

Did you try leaving the brales applied a couple seconds longer after you shift into reverse to be sure the trans is well ingaged before you leave off the brakes? another thing, do the tires spin as soon as you shift into reverse or whenever you let go the brakes.

Re: mustang jumps when shifting from park to reverse

have the brakes applied, the car just chirps the tires from park to reverse real quick.

Tranny could be slipping, did you rebuild it yourself or have a shop do it?

Re: mustang jumps when shifting from park to reverse

You may just have a very tight converter in the car with a stall speed about the same as idle rpm. This could explain the chirp at the shift. Maybe the converter just locks up too early.
