timing problems

ok heres the scenerio...425, 30 over mild crane cam on a 66..in a 66 dynamic 88. 4bbl edelbrock...all the goodies..dual exhaust yadda yadda. car never stayed in time. ive owned it for over 18 years now. rebuilt factory distributor..new points, rotor,cap and wires. i even tried the pertronix conversion kit but was sent the wrong one...they are sending me the right one now...in the meantime why wont this sucker stay in time. i set the dwell, set the timing and drive around the block and bam its off again...both timing and dwell. holding clamp is fine, like i said distributor is a rebuild..new dist gear, fairly new camshaft. car runs great but timing sucks. i can never get this car dialed in to run a whole season without problems. is the electronic conversion my answer? like i said the new ones on the way...so we will see. in the meantime my top is down in the garage. and im missing the best part of ragtop weather. by the way this car is sick for all you full size olds fans...white with a black top and interior,,,s/s cragers on fat tires all trim was shaved and the front was dropped, i run polly air bags in the rear to give it that cheese grater look us old school guys like. its been a great car for a long time...but im tired of the timing problems...is this common on oldsmobiles of this year? any suggestions? thanks in advance

Thats a common problem with points. Points are a hassle. They are well known for doing that.You need an HEI distributor. Im sure your wiring system has a place capable of supporting the single 12 volt source an HEI needs. With about 6 feet of 10 gauge wire, a fusable link, and a few wiring connectors, you could modify your car up to accept the upgrade. A brand new distributor would run you $100-150 brand new with warrenty. A distributor advance curve kit ($10) would make a nice addition to the HEI if the motors been cammed up. That would be my next move. I did it to my 72 Catalina, and havent looked back.

HR chevy, thats what I was gonna suggest doing. Way back in '78 my dad did that conversion for my '71 Cutlass and it worked great. My Current '71 Cutlass has the same mod and never gives any trouble, and yes a full 12V to teh dist...
