It won't matter how many they produced, just how many of them are left.

That isn't true though. Just using your example, first generation mustangs aren't even worth that much, unless its a limited production model. It won't matter how many 98 tiburons are on the road in 25 years, they will still not be worth a cent. It won't matter how many 2000 mustang GTs are on the road in 2030 they still won't be worth very much 30 years after.

I really like the Supra, but at the same time it is one of the most over-valued cars on the road. If you can find a MkIV Supra TT in good condition in your price range I would pounce on it. They are just really cool cars in my mind. One of the few Japanese cars I would really consider for myself.

$25,000 gives you tons of options. It shouldn't be that hard to find a used 350z or an early Evo or STI within your reach. I would also check out a BMW E36 M3 and an Audi B5 S4.

You can't use one example to prove a point when you can't be that certain you are right. If people demand them in the future, the owners will demand these people to pay. You might be surprised how much a low miles bone stock civic might be fetching in 20-30 years.

Re: 04-05 WRX vs 93-98 twin turbo supra

I have to agree with the idea that this is a really odd comparison. If you don’t need something practical and can afford the insurance, I’d go for the Supra in a heart beat. Insurance companies are wise to the Supra’s appeal, though. I just bought a WRX wagon recently, and while researching I asked my insurance company about a couple of cars I had long lusted after. The Supra was one of them, and I just about crapped my pants when they gave me a rate. A 2003 Z06 Vette would have had cheaper rates. With the Supra you also run into one of those weird scenarios where market value is way off from book value. Getting a 25 thousand dollar loan on a Supra may be difficult… and if you (God forbid) total it, you’d be hard pressed to get the insurance company to give you what the car cost.

Do you plan on using the car as a daily driver? Hmmmm…. Maybe a Supra would be best used as a garage queen/ weekend fun car. I’d be too nervous to drive one everyday on my relatively modest income. Of course, you may be in a much better situation in that regard.

In terms of the collector value issue… you know what really sucks? The very thing that makes a Supra so desirable to many enthusiasts (the extreme tunability of that inline six!) is what will kill its value down the road. Supras with body kits and monster single turbo conversions will end up being shunned by the hard core connoisseurs who are willing to shell out the big bucks. But then again… maybe people will develop some kind of nostalgia for this whole import tuner thing. Crazier things have happened- if you went back in time ten years and told someone “in the know” what muscle cars would be going for, they would have called you insane.

Sorry about the long post… I was just kind of thinking as I wrote. When I’m ready (and can afford) to buy a car just for fun… I would very much like for it to be a Supra. I just can’t bring myself to pay twice (or more) than the value that NADA puts on a car. Maybe when book values and market values coincide, I’ll feel better.

Ah... one more thing... Dinan M3 threw out some nice choices. If a WRX really appeals to you, low mileage STi models should be available for around 25 grand.
