98 cavalier z24 water pump
I think my water pump finally went bad. Coolant drips steadily from the area close to where the pump meets the timing chain housing cover, I imagine from a weep hole. Now my question is this. I called a local mechanic and he stated I needed to have a special tool, something to do with keeping the timing right while I remove the chain tensioner, since it's a dual overhead cam. Anyway he said I needed to call a dealer cause they would have the tool. So I did and was told just labor would be around $550. I have a chilton manual, and from the book it dosen't look that hard to do, and it says nothing about needing any special tools. So please does anyone have any experience on this? Thanks in advance.

Re: 98 cavalier z24 water pump
Labor seems about right. This was a stupid design on GM's part since you have to remove the timing chain and all that other bullshit. If you have a haynes manual and a weekend you'll be good to go. I have never done a water pump on the 2.4L, so i am not sure on whether you need a special tool or not. Just make sure you double check the timing before you start her up.

Re: 98 cavalier z24 water pump
I have a warning
o not turn backwards or you will bend the valves.Turn the crank as you are tightening a bolt. You do not need a special tool and put the timing marks in the right spot before taking off the timing chain.Replace the timing chain at the same time if needed with a new tensioner.Use 2 5/16 bolts to hold the top gears in place, there is a hole for them and pull them out after setting the timing marks.
