Parts for Airbag Replacement

Hey everyone, I'm considering buying a 97 Metro LSI for a work car for my wife. The only problem is that it had been wrecked and everything has been repaired except the airbags.

Does anyone know what parts you need to replace besides the airbag itself? The parts I see listed are Air Bag, Air Bag control module, Air Bag sensor and air bag clock spring. I have absolutely no experience with air bags and I'm trying to figure out how much it will cost me to fix.

So far I found a pair of airbags for $100 and no idea what other parts I should be looking at.

Re: Parts for Airbag Replacement

Welcome to AF!

I Don't have much experience with airbags myself but I suspect you wouldn't need to replace the clockspring as its function is merely to transmit the signal from the wiring harness to the airbag (clockspring resides under the steering wheel) so unless it was damaged in the accident it should still be functional. On my wifes convertible it also connects the horn button: you might be able to get an idea if your clockspring is ok by honking the horn: if the horn works I'd bet the clockspring is ok. Similarly I would think the Air Bag control module should also still be good unless it suffered physical damage. The Air Bag sensor I would definitely replace as I wouldn't want to risk depending on one that had been "used".

I'd also suggest calling the dealer and see what they say needs replaced. this will help you decide what you need to do. Good Luck and keep us posted on what you find out.
