oil filter problems

i have a 99 cougar and while driving down the road my oil light came on... within in minutes i lost forward motion (rpms reved but no movement) so i coasted off to the side and shut the car down. when i got out i saw oil pouring out from underneath the car. no mechanic shops were open so i called a mechanic buddy who came out got underneath and pulled out an exploded oil filter. i put another filter on and more oil but the car would not start. i called the place where i got my oil changed and they came and got the car... when they got it in their shop they said it started and ran but blew up the next oil filter. i don't know what to think right now. i have just put over $1800 into this car in 3 months with battery cables, alternator, and all sorts of bullsh%*. i've been told something about an oil pressure relief valve and the oil pump but i'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this as information about this seems limited. thank you.

Its been a long time since run across this but their used to be a spring and steel ball which screwed in on the side of the oil filter adapter. I think you can buy a new gasket or o-ring and unbolt it from the block then look for the relief valve. I would buy a new spring and ball install a manual pressure gage and adjust it to the correct pressure. Ford should have parts and directions in the kit. Go to ford and ask to look at the microfish so you know exactly you are looking for.

thank you for that i will have to check that too but as it turned out i ended up having to replace the damn engine. in the process of the oil spill i blew two bearings and the crankshaft.... yeah i was completely devastated. since i've gotten it back i have had it in the shop twice (it is still there right now) i blew the main radiator hose and something caught fire in my transmission. i'm starting to think that i have bad luck lol.

For future reference if you see the oil light come on put the car in neutral and kill the engine and coast to the side of the road. If you are in heavy traffic and can't just kill the engine get to the side of the road right away then kill the motor. If you would have done this you might have been able to save the engine from getting damaged. The key word there is might. Lessons learned.

And yes it was the pressure relief valve that caused it.

Did you just put in another 2.5 or did you go for the 3.0?
