97 Taurus LX Dies after start- Ideas?
My 97 Ford Taurus LX 3.0 24V DHOC will start and immidiately die a few times until it will just crank but not start anymore.
This happens even when I gas it hard to keep it running. (Have tried everything as far as the accelerator goes) This seems to mainly take place when it gets as low as right around 30 degrees. It has happened in warmer conditions also though. A little while later, the car will start fine and run like the champ it is (Or was..). I have recently replaced the plugs and wires, battery and alternator. I have also recently changed the oil and other fluids. Any Ideas of what could be the problem? Thanks in advance! |

Re: 97 Taurus LX Dies after start- Ideas?
This sounds like what will happen if the secondary intake runner butterflies are stuck open. I'm not sure if the 1997 uses vacuum actuated or motor actuated butterflies. However, stuck open secondaries can cause exactly what you describe.
Another possibility would be an EGR valve that is stuck open. You may also want to check the coolant temperature sensor to make sure it is in range. There are two devices monitoring the coolant temperature, a coolant temperature sensor and a coolant temperature sender. The sensor sends a signal to the PCM for coolant temperature, the sender only provides the signal to the instrument cluster guage and will not effect driveability. -Rod |
