1996 Tracker a/c controls

I just bought a used 1996 Tracker. The a/c works great on high and the next lower setting, but anything lower and the controls don't seem to work. I'm hoping this is something simple? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Had the same problem with mine. The blower switch is made into the control unit, and it was coming apart. Took a wire tie and wrapped it around it so it would make contact. Also make sure the wiring is connected properly. Hope that helps you.

Re: 1996 Tracker a/c controls

Had same problem with my 95 since I bought it, A/C fan worked on high and one below. I didn't sweat it was just happy it worked. The other day some wierd things started happening, like the key buzzer coming on after I shut it off, even before I opened the door. I don't remember it even working before. Then I noticed the (heater) fan would only work on high now. So it was either on or off. I decided check it out, before it got tooo cold here.

Well like Hawg says it was the fan switch assembly coming apart. Seems like this may be a common problem. I confirmed this by moving the wires right at the switch assy., reaching in from the glovebox side.

First how to get at the (heater) blower switch? The manual says to take 2 pins out to remove the glove box. It turns out there are 2 screws inside the glovebox which hold the pins in, ha. Then 5 screws holding the center console cover, to get at the AC/heater control assembly (the cover over the control assembly just pulls out). The blower switch is part of a molded assembly with all the other heater/AC controls. NOT a good design. There are 3 cables going to this assembly. I never did figure out how to remove the cables without damaging them. Then I tried to figure out just how Hawg managed to tiewrap the switch?

After manipulating the control assy. (not easy) I saw a small hole just to the left side of the switch. Somehow managed to get a looong tiewrap through the small whole. I chose to go from right to left in case it loosened up, so I could again reach in from the glove box side - to pull it tight, in case it loosens again. I do NOT want to have to take this apart again. Such a pain. NOT EASY, but I got it through, pulled it snug. Tried it, seems to work on low now.

Never did find any resistor pack the manual say is mounted on the motor housing.

Since it is cold and dark now, I will wait til tomorrow to see if I can remember just how this thing goes back together.

Same problem with my '95. Of course, I didn't think it was a problem until I read this, I just figured the fan went into "stealth mode" er somethin' when it was set low. And to think I just had the controls all uncovered to put my CD player in!

I also learned today not to trust a Hayne's Manual when it comes to my Tracker.

Mine is working Great. As soon as I saw the switch I figured it must happen to all of them.

Now looking for tires so I can try it out in the snow.
