![]() For whatever reason, I cannot figure this out. I've searched and searched, and I can't find a solution. Whenever I start the car, the alternator squeals and if I gently rev it to above 3K, it stops. And it only starts back if the RPM's drop below 500. It's killing me. I've tried to tighten the belt, and that doesn't help. I've tried spraying wd40 on it, and it doesn't help. I'm about ready to drop that b18 in it just so I don't have to listen to the pulley.

Re: Alternator sqeals incessantly...
mebbe the belt is excessively worn/stretched... time for a new one?
while u r taking the belt off... spin the pulley by hand & listen for any irregularities... mebbe the bearings are starting to go? |

Re: Alternator sqeals incessantly...
yeah i agree with rice ive had the problem a few times and its always turned out to be the belt. its just old and stretched out so it squeals. go buy a new one for 8 bucks and itll take you about 15 mins to put it in. you dont even have to jack up the car

Re: Alternator sqeals incessantly...
My girlfriend squeals incessantly when I do some "colourful" driving in my Si,I may try using a belt on her to see if that shuts her up.If it don't I'll douse her in WD40...

Re: Alternator sqeals incessantly...
the armature (SP?) bearings might have a polished spot in them, and if they do, they will squeal occaisionally... that's what's wrong with mine, I'm just waiting to get the indiv carb'd D16A1 ready to go in before I fix anything else...
not meaning to hijack the thread, but anyone know how realistic it would be to make 200 bhp out of a 8 psi with 9.2:1 and 4 carbs (originally meant to feed 500 cc's a piece) on a D16A1 1st gen 'teg motor? anyway, a simple rebuild of the alternator will fix the squealing if the belt doesn't and it shouldn't be that expensive... I can get them done free + parts, b/c my uncle does them professionally
