I'm about to dig into my problem but wanted to run this past the guys here on Automotive Forums. I have a fullsize K5 87 V8 w/TBFI that I let sit for about 10 months (got a new vehicle and this wasn't needed). Now I've decided to dust her off and get it ready for the winter. I periodically would run the engine for about 20 min (maybe about once a month) and that was all. Yesterday, I tried starting but it needed a little coaxing (peddling) for a sec but it started up. Everything was fine for about 10 min then all of a sudden the engine increased it's idle speed to about 1000rpm (up from about 750). Nothing out the ordinary other than that for the next 3-5 min. Then I decided to get inside and tap the pedal to see if it would idle down. As soon as I touched the throttle, it just went dead (like I turned the key off)... no roughness or anything out the ordinary. I tried restarting but no go... didn't even consider starting up for me... not even a cough.
I shot a burst of starting fluid down into the throat of the throttlebody (with the butterfly open). Tried starting again... no go... just engin spin. I let it go until this morning... as soon as I tapped it, it started right up. Then it basically went through the same thing it did yesterday after it was warmed up... it just stopped running. I left it alone until after lunch and it started right up. I hesitantly put it in gear and spun around the block and it seemed good. I left it in the driveway running and after about 5 min or 10 min... it just died. I turned of the iginition and I've left it alone until I figured out what's going on. I apologize for the detail here but just want to get some opinions. |

Here's the resolution to the problem:
Replace the Coolant Temp. Sensor Yes, the coolant sensor was the fix. The ECU doesn't lie... but you know how most like to defy or attempt to defy logic. Everything is good to go now.
