Rust on rocker panels?
My 95 Metro has rust under the doors and I was wondering if anyone uses a rust inhibitor on their car and if so what is a good easy to apply brand? Would like to halt continued rusting.
Also where Metros rust on frame, anyone use rust inhibitor there? Thanks Mark |

Re: Rust on rocker panels?
I've used various spray-on and brush-on rust inhibitors . . they all appear to work well.
If its simple "surface" rust - I usually just take a wire-wheel on the end of an electric (or air) drill and bring the area down to solid metal - then apply the rust inhibitor, then paint. If its advanced rust and there is actually a hole in the body, you'll not only have to treat the rust (or remove it all by cutting away the damaged section) but somehow cover the hole to prevent water and debris from getting behind the panels. A mig welder and a bit of creative "tin snipping" will do the trick - tin installed with pop-rivets and epoxy will work - or an epoxy/fibreglass repair kit. For lower body work, you can cover the entire area with paintable "gravel guard" - which is a rubbery type paint and resists chipping. The gravel guard is thick and somewhat textured ... which will cover lots of imperfections in the body work - so you don't have to have a perfectly smooth surface to work with. Gravel guard works well on the front nose section of the Metro hood as well, since that area is prone to lots of stone chips - and eventual rust. cheers, |
