Turbocharge or not?

The last few days have been driving me crazy. I'm ready to do some major upgrades to my 99 Maxima but I am torn in two directions. Staying NA on the car or building a turbo kit. My problem comes in the form of money, where I would need to save up for the turbo. If I stay NA now and decide to turbo later then I've waisted plenty of money on intakes, y pipe, etc.

Should I go for the gusto or just tinker around? I'm a BIG turbo fan and it has always been my dream to turbocharge my Maxima.

Help me figure this one out. Stay NA or Turbocharge?

Re: Turbocharge or not?

how mechanically inclined are you? also is your maxima equipped with an LSD tranny cuz pushing alot of power to the front wheels without it is a big mistake IMO. also you have to think about how you're going to get it installed, unless you can do it yourself, which i hear is quite hard becuase there's nowhere in the engine bay to mount the turbo so it ususally gets mounted to the tranny case, which means extra piping, plus you'll have to relocate your battery to the trunk and a few other things.

these maxima's respond really well to turbo's. if you can i'd recommend assembling your own kit since most kits for our cars are in the $4000-$7000 range. ifyou plan to buy a pre assembledkit PFI makes the best turbo setup for our cars IMO, with their kit they got a 97 maxima to 270whp@only 4 psi.

if you're really serious about it and think you can afford/manage it i say do it, i've always told myself that one day i'll buy another 4th gen maxima and slap a turbo on her, it'd be one of the sickest sleepers ever. if you do it though, you're gonna lose daily drivability.

Re: Turbocharge or not?

Actually the best place for the turbo is where the battery is. A relocation kit is a must!

I am mechanically inclined and plan on doing all the work myself. But I only plan on pushing 6 PSI.

Re: Turbocharge or not?

If you're worried about daily driveability then lower the compression. However, at 4-6 PSI I don't think it will be much of an issue.

You know what I think. If you can't afford the turbo now, then do supporting mods until you can, but don't waste your time with N/A. It will cost a lot more to get the same amount of power than it will with F/I. Besides, going N/A will put more strain on your engine.
