valve cover gasket job v8

I found oil in one of my spark plug wells yesterday when changing my plugs. now I have to replace the gasket. I'm sure I can do this myself but would appreciate some advice from the pros before jumping in. I will only be doing the pas side at this time since the other side is fine. thanks in advance Dan

Re: valve cover gasket job v8

I believe tips and tricks for this job have been posted numerous times on this forum. Have you searched the forum for tips? (Hint: A search will yield at least one very helpful thread, such as http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...t=valve+cover).

Also, what year is your LS? I may be able to e-mail you the factory steps if you want to send me a private message.

Re: valve cover gasket job v8

Its an 02, and I have it fixed!!! the instructions I recievd were great. I had the entire problem taken care of in 3 days.

Thursday, my wife said that it was acting up and the check engine light was on so I took it to work with me, went to change the spark plugs and found oil in one of the RH spark plug wells. I cleaned it out, changed the rest of the plugs and put it all back together.

She drove it maybe 50 miles before it happend again (friday night) I wasnt sure at that point if it was the coil from being shorted out by the oil previously or if the well had new oil in it.

The next morning I got up early, went to the dealer, got a RH valve cover kit and a new coil, and started tearing into it. It only took 2 hours or so and I found no oil in the well.

so if your having the same problem, just pull your coils, check for oil, replace any coils that have standing oil in the well that it came from and change the gasket. If you cant get to the gasket right away, just replace the coil / coils and clean out all the oil from the well. Who knows how long that will work but at least you can drive it without that annoying misfire.

The coil was $100.00 and the gasket kit was $39.00
