'82 Rabbit Diesel - Delete AC Compressor
Help... I'm doing some repairs on my son's Diesel 82 Rabbit. The AC compressor housing is cracked in several places and won't hold proper tension to drive the alternator, which incidentally needs replacing. I need to permanently remove the AC compressor and fit a non-AC style alternator. Can anybody tell me what's entailed in this? A new mounting bracket for the alternator? Any help much appreciated.

Re: '82 Rabbit Diesel - Delete AC Compressor
there is a dedicated non a/c bracket, which if you can find would provide a more trouble free instalation, but if you can't then you can remove the a/c compressor and install the long alternator pulley (it has about a 2" offset) to get the right pulley alignment and use a longer belt to go around the crank, waterpump, and alternator pulleys.

Re: '82 Rabbit Diesel - Delete AC Compressor
check on vw foxes or their audi equivalent. the offset is realy just a touch long for perfect alignment, but it requires less work than swaping the accesory mounting bracket. like i said earlier, the best solution is to get the stock bracket fot a non-a/c instalation; it uses the short alternator pulley, but positions the alternator lower on the front of the engine and aligned with the crank and waterpump; plus the shorter belt won't bounce around as bad because the spacing between all the pulleys is shorter.

Yeah, this is a quick fix...
Just got to fetch the pulley. get a huungous belt.... The pulley noticeably looks different?. As for the non- Ac bracket........ do you know a way to use the 90 amp. alternator with the non-ac setup instead of using the 65 amper....... |
