Trans Mount

Took 98 Park Ave in for a state insp. I did ask the service writer to have the car looked over really well especially the brakes. He came back and said there was a broken transmission mount that had to be replaced to pass inspection. Brakes would pass but would need replacing soon. I told him to go ahead and do both. I got the old parts for the trans mount. It was not broken but it seems there is a bushing or spacer of some sort associated with that mount which does seem worn out. But the bracket itself is neither cracked or broken. Do you only get the rubber bushing/spacer with a new bracket or has my dealer fed me another line of BS? $315.33 for just the part . . . Could anyone clarify this for me?

Re: Trans Mount

I would go to a parts store and get a quote for a mount. Double the price and add $80.00 labor 1 hr.shouldn't be over $100.00 for the job.

Question Re: Trans Mount

Welcome to AF!
First of all, which mount was it? Look at the pic below and you will see an item number for each one. Post back with the number of the one that was replaced. (I have never of a car failing inspection due to a bad trans mount!)

Re: Trans Mount

Edit: The part looks like #13 the rear trans mount.. What bugs me is that the rubber seems to be all that is worn out. The physical bracket I have is neither cracked or broken.

It's the rubber that wears out due to age, wear and tear, and driving conditions. And yes you have to buy the whole unit, not just the rubber.

Re: Trans Mount

The problem with the 1998 PA, is that you cannot find an aftermarket mount at any of the neighborhood part stores. Usually, the left front mount breaks before the others (Item #10). Do you have the part number on the invoice? If so, was it;
# 22201112 LF Trans mount Item # 10 $130 bucks + shipping
# 22178776 LR Trans mount rear Item #13 $77 bucks + shipping

Yes, both are a very expensive piece of rubber; however, both items can be purchased from GM Parts Direct, for 100% less than what you paid. Hate to be the one to rub salt into the wound, however, I assume you have already concluded, the dealer made a good profit on your part & repairs!
