Alternator voltage too high!

Started getting occasional battery light on 2000 MPV. 150 kmiles. Expected to find low alternator output, but instead read 15.5 - 16.5 volts (too high) when light is on. Voltage is 14.2 (normal) when light is not on.

Anyone had similar experience?

I don't have a wiring diagram. Does this vehicle have a voltage regulator separately mounted from the alternator?

Re: Alternator voltage too high!

Well, the high-voltage either fried the battery and it died overnight, or the alternator/regulator had an internal short and drained the battery overnight. Either way, the battery was dead this morning.

By the way, the regulator is internal to the alternator but is a replaceable part. It cost nearly $200 from dealer. With the miles on car, I decided to go with new alternator which includes the regulator. Costs $325 from dealer. Belt $40. Been a high cost day!

BAD JOB! Took me around 8 hrs or so. Removed the alternator, then the alternator bracket ... could not remove alternator from engine compartment until the exhaust manifold was removed from engine!

Everything now seems OK. Voltage is 14 volts.
