90 Lumina dies on acceleration - intermittently.
I have a 1990 Lumina with a 3.1 with about 130,000 miles on it. In the last couple of weeks I've had intermittent problems when trying to accelerate. The first time, it was cold and I drove about 1/4 mile and died when I gave it gas. It started back up and idles fine but then died after reving the engine. It repeated the same thing about 6 times and started up without any problems each time. I let it sit for about 30 minutes and started it up and drove it back to my house without any problems.
The second time was after I drove it for 10 miles, parked for about 15 minutes then it did the same thing, died on trying to accelerate. Started up OK but died upon reving the engine. Repeated several times. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and ran fine. I replaced the fuel filter, checked the plugs and cables. I've already replaced the computer 3 years ago. Fuel pump is working just fine. Has anyone had this happen before? |

Have you measured fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rail? Just because the pump is running, doesn't mean it isn't the problem. You should have around 35psi, key on/engine off and it shouldn't drop more than 3-5 psi with the engine running and vacuum hose attached to regualtor.

Re: 90 Lumina dies on acceleration - intermittently.
I have not measured the fuel pressure, I don't have a pressure gauge and I don't want to put any more money into this car than I have to. I did relieve the pressure with my finger and it seemed to be pretty good
but that was while it wasn't running. I checked with Car Quest but they don't lend out pressure gauges. Does anyone know if other auto stores might lend it out like they do with diagnostic tools? |
